Transmission Issues

"We're a superpower with a Third World grid"

—New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, 14 August 2003

"Transmission, transmission, transmission.  That's what will define energy in the West."

—Utah Governor Mike Leavitt, 14 September 2003

WAPA Rate Case

Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) has issued its draft 2004 Rate Adjustments for transmission and ancillary services.  Comments from advocates of renewable energy technologies are important to this process and were due by 11 September 2003.

"Wind Pipeline" Concept Paper

Read a fascinating concept paper by Tom Gray of the American Wind Energy Association in which he proposes the phased development of Trans-Prairie and Interior West Wind "Pipelines" to collect wind-generated electricity from the windy, lightly-populated, high Plains and interior West and deliver it to cities in the Midwest and West.  Gray points out that this proposal would help deal with the nation's natural gas shortage and would increase the overall reliability of the national electricity transmission system.

National Wind Coordinating Committee's Draft Planning Principles

These transmission planning principles were discussed at a Western Transmission Workshop conducted by the National Wind Coordinating Committee in Portland, Oregon in June, 2003.
